KCHE is pleased to announce our 2019 Teachers of the Year! Ashley Umphrey of Chisholm Trail Middle School in Olathe has been selected as the Elementary Teacher of the Year which recognizes teachers at the K-6 level. Ashley was nominated by her principal, Dr. Mike Wolgast, who stated that “Ashley brings social studies to life for her students. Her students truly become historians.” Lindsey Dowell of Washburn Rural Middle School in Topeka has been selected as the Secondary Teacher of the Year which recognizes teachers at the 7-12 level. Lindsey was nominated by her colleague, Nathan McAlister, who described her as a teacher who can “engage students, promote empathy, and produce high quality historical thinking skills.” Awards will be given at the Kansas Social Studies Conference - Awards Reception on Sunday, October 20, 7:00pm at Newman University (Dugan Conference Center) in Wichita. Each teacher will receive a plaque, a monetary prize, and free conference registration for this year's Kansas Social Studies Conference. Congratulations, Ashley and Lindsey! This year we will be joined by keynote speaker Dr. John Fea, Professor of American History at Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Fea will be speaking about his book Why Study History?, published in 2013, in which he shows how reflecting on contemporary life from a historical perspective helps us better understand ourselves and the world around us. We are also accepting nominations for the 2019 KCHE Teacher of the Year Awards. Two teachers will be recognized at our Fall conference, one at the Elementary level and one at the Secondary level. For embodying our mission of rigorous research that pertains to local/state history, Marie received a $100 prize and certificate! We invite you to submit a breakout session proposal for the 2019 Kansas Social Studies Conference, Authentic Learning: Making History Matter, to be held at Newman University in Wichita October 20 - 21, 2019. Sessions will be approximately 45 minutes long and may include, but are not limited to, panels, roundtables, or workshops focused on curriculum, literacy, technology, and best practices. Proposals must be received by August 1, 2019. Presenters will be notified by August 15th. If selected, presenters will be required to pre-register for the conference. The 2018 Kansas Social Studies conference targets the teaching and learning of thinking skills and assessments with a special focus on creating civically engaged students. You’ll be hanging out at the Lyon County History Center and the campus of Emporia State University with a couple hundred other social studies teachers and you’ll walk away smarter with new details about civic engagement strategies, tech integration tools, and current best practice.
