KCHE is pleased to announce our 2019 Teachers of the Year! Ashley Umphrey of Chisholm Trail Middle School in Olathe has been selected as the Elementary Teacher of the Year which recognizes teachers at the K-6 level. Ashley was nominated by her principal, Dr. Mike Wolgast, who stated that “Ashley brings social studies to life for her students. Her students truly become historians.” Lindsey Dowell of Washburn Rural Middle School in Topeka has been selected as the Secondary Teacher of the Year which recognizes teachers at the 7-12 level. Lindsey was nominated by her colleague, Nathan McAlister, who described her as a teacher who can “engage students, promote empathy, and produce high quality historical thinking skills.” Awards will be given at the Kansas Social Studies Conference - Awards Reception on Sunday, October 20, 7:00pm at Newman University (Dugan Conference Center) in Wichita. Each teacher will receive a plaque, a monetary prize, and free conference registration for this year's Kansas Social Studies Conference. Congratulations, Ashley and Lindsey! Thank you for all that you do to advance history education for the students of Kansas.
